Fair Trade is about better prices and decent working conditions for producers and workers. It’s about supporting their communities, giving them more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work.

Harrogate Fair Trade Shop has been trading for over 30 years with the sole aim of helping people change their lives through trade, lifting themselves and their communities out of poverty. Everything you buy in our shop is an ethical purchase, helping someone to help themselves.

We are a tiny shop, housed in the former porch of St Peter’s Church in the centre of Harrogate and staffed by volunteers. We make the most of the space we have, with a huge variety of fair trade products from around the world which showcase the skill and ingenuity of the artisans. Many are unusual products, not often found on the high street.

We are a registered charity (no 1164801) and a member of BAFTS, the British Association of Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers. Most of our products come from organisations who are also members of BAFTS or who are affiliated with the World Fair Trade Organisation.

We are open Monday to Saturday 10.30 – 4.30.

Our shop wouldn’t run without our team of volunteers who staff the shop six days a week, providing a friendly face and knowledge about our fair trade products.

We’re always on the look out for new people to help staff the shop for a couple of hours –  once a week, once a fortnight or even just once a month. We also have an advent volunteering scheme for those who want to make their Christmas more ethical by lending a hand when the shop is at its busiest in the last couple of months of the year.

Shop duties include operating the till, opening and closing the shop and sometimes a bit of help with display, pricing or cleaning. If you’re enthusiastic about fair trade or would be interested to learn a bit more, and you have a bit of time to spare, we’d love to hear from you. Pop into the shop to find out more or send us an email using this link.

We can provide stalls on a sale or return basis, boxed up and ready for wherever you’d like to host one, be it at a community event, school fair or church coffee morning. Fair Trade Fortnight and Christmas are our most popular times but we also provide regular stalls for school tuck shops and after church sales.

We need a couple of weeks notice and an idea about what kinds of products you’d like and who your customers might be so we can select the right kind of things for your event. We’ll arrange a time with you to pick it up from our store room at Community House.
